Mistake No.1: Not Reaching Out To Your Audience Effectively

The first mistake is to not reach out to your audience effectively. To not use the communications channels your audience has easy - and free - access to.

These could be of course be offline locations – meeting places, regular events and networking meetings, but are increasingly online forums and social media platforms.

Why Is It a Mistake?

This is a mistake because it’s wasting an opportunity you have in front of you to easily get your messages in front of prospects. Prospects who need your services.

People spend an increasing amount of time online, and have their interests met by many online groups and forums. These are prime targets for your offerings. But if you're not visible there, your prospects will use one of your competitors.

What Should You Do Instead?

You can - and should - use the established online communications channels that your target market uses. In order to do this, you need to do a few things first.

  1. Identify your target market clearly
  2. Find out where they hang out
  3. Go there and lurk – see what questions they are asking
  4. Post material interesting to them. Answer their questions. Be helpful.

The key thing is to add value first - so people can see that you're helpful. But you also want to encourage them to spend more time with you.

So when posting, make sure your posts always encourage them to visit your blog, landing page or sales page. It’s the first step to become known – then you want to help them more via your paid services.

Mistake No.2: Not Consistently Delivering What Your Market Needs

I’m making the assumption that you already deliver something that a defined market – or market segment needs. That your product or service is of high quality and that your market benefits from having it.

If this is not the case, then work out what your market needs, and supply that. You don’t have to supply services for all their needs. But you do need to have a solution that consistently meets their needs.

What Is The Mistake?

The mistake here is to not appreciate what your market needs. Sometimes it’s as simple as not actually asking then. The emphasis of your service may be wrong – it may not deliver what they actually WANT.

Why Is It a Mistake?

If you don’t supply what they want, they are not going to buy. You're going to lose out to your competitors.

What Should You Do Instead?

Get into the habit of asking your prospects what they want. You have to know their wants and needs better than they do. And the only way to do this, if you’re not a member of your target market yourself, is to ask them.

Obviously you can use FAQ pages posted online as a starting point. And by hanging out in groups you’ll see the questions that members post. Then you’ll begin to see patterns.

Then you might like to ask them via the groups that they’re in. You can post a question, or invite them to complete a short survey. You can use the free questionnaire tool on Google Drive for this – it’s easy to use, and it’s free.

Mistake No.3: Not Being 'Top Of Mind' For Your Target Audience

You want to be the first person members of your target market think of. You NEED to be the name on the tip of their tongue. Their first logical port of call – what marketers call the ‘Top of Mind’ concept.

This is why Lever Brothers and Proctor & Gamble spend so much on brand advertising. It’s so that when you enter a supermarket and need to buy, say shampoo, you have a brand name clearly in mind. When you win the battle for your prospects’ minds they will look for your product or service when they need to buy.

So What Is The Mistake Here?

The mistake is to not using the communication channels open to you to tell your market about the benefits of your service.

This is a mistake because when members of your target market decide they need services that you provide, if they don’t know why they should buy from YOU, then their money will go elsewhere.

What Should You Do Instead?

Instead of not being 'top of mind' for your target audience, you should be visible both online on forums AND on your own website. Your blog should be regularly updated with material useful to your target market.

Of course, you must also clearly offer your services - and to do this you'll need a sales letter or sales video.
